Located right here in Harlingen at the Marine Military Academy, the Iwo Jima Memorial is home to the original full-sized working model of the iconic Iwo Jima monument — a 32-foot bronze sculpture created by Dr. Felix W. de Weldon and dedicated in 1982. The memorial commemorates the legendary February 23, 1945 flag-raising at Mount Suribachi and honors the Marines who gave their lives, including Corporal Harlon Block from nearby Weslaco, who is reburied at the monument's base. A deeply moving and free-to-visit landmark, it stands as one of the most powerful tributes to American military valor in the entire country.
